How Kundli Milan works

The eight kutas

Ashta Kuta matching compares the two partners' Moons: each Moon sign and nakshatra. Eight factors (kutas) are scored, and the higher a kuta's weight, the more it counts: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8, 36 gunas in all. Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana alone carry 21 of the 36.

Varna and Vashya look at temperament and mutual influence by the Moon signs. Tara counts the nakshatras from one Moon to the other, for wellbeing. Yoni gives each nakshatra an animal nature. Graha Maitri asks whether the lords of the two Moon signs are friends. Gana sorts each nakshatra as Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. Bhakoot scores zero when the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart. Nadi scores zero when both nakshatras share one of the three nadis.

Reading the score

A score is one part of a match. Many astrologers accept exceptions to Nadi and Bhakoot dosha — for example, both Moon signs ruled by the same planet — and this score does not apply them, so a zero there is worth a closer look rather than a verdict. Astrologers also compare the two charts' 7th houses, Venus and the running dashas, which the Guru's reading looks at.

The table under your score shows each kuta's points and what it looks at, so you can see where a low score comes from. Mangal dosha is checked in each chart, with the widely agreed exceptions that cancel it; when both partners have it, tradition holds that it balances.

Questions

How many gunas should match for marriage?

Traditionally at least 18 of 36. Here 18 to 24 is shown as a good match and 25 or more as excellent. Below 18, astrologers look at the rest of the two charts before saying anything.

What is Nadi dosha?

When both Moons' nakshatras belong to the same nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), Nadi scores 0 of 8. Tradition links it with health and children. Several exceptions are widely accepted, so on its own it is not a reason to call off a match.

Is 36 out of 36 the perfect match?

A full score is rare, and it describes how the two Moons fit, not the whole of two lives. A good marriage depends on far more than any score.

Does the birth time matter for matching?

Less than for a Kundli. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so noon usually gives the right sign and nakshatra, unless the Moon changed nakshatra that day. Mangal dosha from the Ascendant does need the time.

Can we marry if our score is low?

Yes. Many couples with low scores have long, happy marriages. A low score is a reason to look at both whole charts with care, not a ban, and the decision is always yours.

Why is the first partner read as the groom?

The traditional tables score some kutas, such as Varna and Gana, differently for the groom and the bride, so the order changes the score slightly.
