About this Kundli
What a Kundli shows
A Kundli (Janam Kundali) maps where the Sun, the Moon, the five planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu stood at the moment of your birth, seen from your birthplace. It is drawn as twelve houses counted from the Ascendant (Lagna), the sign rising in the east. Each house stands for a part of life — the 7th for partnership, the 10th for work — and the planets in it, and the planet that rules it, colour that part.
The D1 (Rashi) chart is the main one. The D9 (Navamsha) divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′; astrologers read it for marriage and for the real strength of each planet, so a planet well placed in both is counted strong.
The dasha: when things happen
The Vimshottari dasha divides a 120-year cycle among the nine grahas. Where you start depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth: the part of it the Moon still had to cross sets how much of the first Mahadasha was left. Each Mahadasha divides into nine Antardashas, so your chart shows the period running today and when the next begins.
Why the birth time matters
The Ascendant moves through a sign in about two hours, so a few minutes can change it, and with it every house. The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day. Each chart says when its Ascendant or Navamsha sits near a boundary, and by how many minutes.
Questions
Is a Kundli the same as a horoscope?
Yes: Kundli, Janam Kundali, Janam Patri and birth chart all mean the chart of your birth. A daily horoscope (rashifal) is different: it reads the day's sky against your Moon sign, not your whole chart.
What is the difference between my Lagna and my rashi?
Your Lagna is the sign that was rising at your birth; it changes about every two hours. Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in; it changes about every two and a half days. Both are sidereal, so your Sun sign here is usually one sign earlier than in a western horoscope.
I don't know my birth time. Can I still get a Kundli?
Yes. The chart is cast for noon. The planets' signs and your Moon sign are almost always right, and usually the nakshatra and the dasha too; the Ascendant, the houses and the Navamsha can't be trusted.
Why does my chart differ from another website's?
Usually one of three choices: the ayanamsa (Lahiri here; KP or Raman move every degree a little), the house system (whole-sign here; Bhava Chalit can move a planet into the next house), or the time zone used for your birth. Our method page lists every choice.
Are my birth details stored?
No. The free chart is calculated and shown, and nothing is kept unless you create an account and save it.
Every choice behind this calculation — the ephemeris, the ayanamsa, the houses and the rules — is listed on How we calculate.
